Ozpin is sitting behind a desk in a classroom, Taiyang and Qrow are on the other side. Professor Ozpin opens the door and gestures inside the room. Ruby: ( panicked) It's society's fault! I'm young and impressionable! Video games made me do it! Yang: I object! They have no witnesses! We were framed! Tai: ( annoyed) What did you girls do this time? Taiyang Xiao Long and Qrow Branwen approach them. Ruby Rose and Yang Xiao Long are sitting in chairs in a Beacon Academy hallway, near a closed door. Thank the teacher, and email them later when you think of more questions. In a space of pure whiteness, the giant blocky title and a certain rose emblem drop from the sky to the ground, where the four miniaturized members of Team RWBY pop out from behind it to smile, wave and adopt poses for the audience while an unseen speaker announces the show as: " RWBY CHIBI "! Kids are complicated and a parent-teacher conference just scratches the surface and opens the door for an ongoing convo. That way you can go back with that all-important follow-up, if needed. They said if you don’t have any big concern you know you want to bring up, this is always the best question to fall back on: “What can I do to help my child at home?” End on a good note. I also checked in with a set of my teacher friends. I feel like those issues bleed into home life and this is your chance to explain what’s going on outside of school. But you can ask about homework-policy wiggle room and leniency with mild tardiness. “Big” is relative but everyone has something, from “can he please switch seats to be by a friend/away from a frenemy” to “we’re starting family therapy and I want you, his teacher, to know.” Don’t tell the teacher to go easy with grades, that’s an obnoxious ask. With 60 seconds left they’ll ask, “Any questions?” That’s why I say to have any big question prepared in advance. They’ll show you homework examples and a few test scores. Good teachers tend to rattle off your child’s strengths, weaknesses, how they’re doing academically, and how they’re doing socially. Be prepared with your most important question. But by then I had already branded myself as the A-hole parent. Later because, wouldn’t you know it, my freakin’ child started to love the class within a month and ended the year singing the teacher’s praises. Immediately, because the teacher was a young childless thing teaching middle-school science and her poor face just fell. The worst thing I ever blurted out was, “My child hates your class.” I regretted it immediately, and again later. I had a crushing preschool conference where I was called out for my super-lame lunches, which I think is funny now, but was a drag to hear at the time. Sometimes, there’s also a homework assignment for you, the parent. But chances are there’s also some nugget of what your kid needs to work on, and you’ll need to absorb whatever that is. Fingers crossed, it’s just that your kid is the absolute best. Usually the teacher has thought ahead of time about what they want to say. Say hello, and acknowledge, “I know we only have a few minutes!” Then get right to it. Now I tell myself ahead of time to keep my big mouth shut. It’s so hard for me to turn off my social self. I have made the mistake, multiple times, of trying to engage a teacher by asking about their recent wedding or their own kid. Pro tip: Snag the first appointment if you can! Keep the pleasantries short – you’ve only got a few minutes! But inevitably, someone’s conference runs long and the teacher gets behind which is why, unless you’re the very first appointment, you’ll probably be waiting. They can’t wait for you and bump everybody back. It’s a huge no-no to miss your time slot because the teacher has to talk to every kid’s parents. That’s because with every year there’s more responsibility on them (especially with homework) and less on me. I will say that the older my now-teens have gotten, the more important it’s been for them to attend parent-teacher conferences. Other times, this is adult-to-adult time. Sometimes you’re supposed to have your kid with you so they hear the update too. Consider bringing your kid, if policy allows. Most importantly, remember that you can take some time to process whatever you hear in this parent-teacher conference and circle back later with an email. Accept that the teacher might have insight into your kid that you don’t, because you are busy parenting and they have their eye on how they’re learning. Assume the teacher likes kids and does understand them. Be prepared in advance for what is essentially a lighting round on your kid’s progress, then leave feeling like you got the most you could out of it.Ī few ground rules: Be kind to the teacher. So it’s always a shock when you have a parent-teacher conference and only get about 10 minutes total to hear how your kid is doing, and respond. Triangles are especially important when it comes to inserting complicated details into designs. The number of triangles added to your mesh was controlled by the Detail slider in the Toolset Modifiers section. If you had wireframe mode enabled (turn it on with the w key), you may have noticed that your model consists of a series of triangles and adding features or modifying the geometry adds triangles to your mesh. Clean up any uneven sections of your model with the “Flatten” and “Grip” tools. Pull out the lower baking part with the “grab tool”. Now with the grab tool you can only pull out the section for your dorsal fin.įor the last jaw section of the dolphin we use a mask to shade the upper part of the head. In this case, we want to pull out the fins as if pressing Ctrl + i to reverse your mask. Anything that is shaded dark gray will not be affected by changes to your mesh. You will see a drunk grey shadow that is your mask. Keep your control button pressed and draw the base of the dorsal fin. Next, we go to the flippers, where we introduce a new concept, masking. To thin it out, switch to the top view and pull the dorsal fin in with the grab tool. By default it is much thicker than the dorsal fin of a real dolphin. Use the “grip tool” to shape the general shape. Once you have designed the tail fin, go up to the dorsal fin. Activating symmetry will greatly facilitate this process and allow us to visualize more quickly whether the lamellas are correctly formed. Pull up more reference images and start forming the tail fin. We will continue to use the “Grab” tool for this, but we will reduce the size of our brush. Next, we design the fins and start shaping the head. In the end, you should have a shape that resembles the body of a dolphin. Once you have the general shape, use the Move and Flatten tools to smooth out uneven parts. We uploaded reference images of a dolphin and used our previous paper sketch for this step. Take some time to shape the sphere into the general shape of your object. It’s good for this step to keep all toolset modifiers in the middle range. To start creating our dolphin, we use the grab tool to shape our object. Ideally, you will have taken some time to experiment with each of the different tools and have a feel for their functions. Now that you’ve gained an overview of the Sculptris interface, we’ll go straight into modeling. We’ll discuss why it’s important to add polygons later in the tutorial. Change the diameter of your brush, the thickness of your brush, and the number of polygons you add. This upper field changes the settings for the currently selected tool. This window allows you to add geometry and import and export files. We will discuss some of these tools later in the tutorial, but right now just make sure you have the symmetry option enabled. These tools do not modify the mesh directly, but each serves a unique function that supports the design process. You will want to experiment with each of them to get a feel for their functions and practice learning the hotkeys as they will help speed up your work considerably. These tools can be seen as brushes that change your object in different ways. This is where you will spend most of your time. Before we start modeling, we will go through the basic components of the Sculptris interface. For this introductory tutorial, we will stick to pencil and paper because Sculptris does not have the ability to import multiple reference images.Īll your designs in Sculptris begin as a simple sphere that is shaped and deformed to create the final object. Experienced users often create their sketches digitally for later use as reference images. For beginners, a pencil and paper is all you need to improve the main features of your design. In this tutorial we will design a dolphin because this animal has a simple shape that allows us to teach the basics of sculpting.Ĭreating a sketch of your design is always a good practice. Without a sense of general form and feel of your design, the rest of the process becomes more difficult. The most important component of the design process is the idea. At the end of this tutorial you will have everything you need to create your own designs and a solid foundation to continue learning. 3D Sculpting allows you to start modeling right away while learning additional tools and techniques. In one way or another, meta-films can be interpreted as movies about movies. Question: What metanarrative are you living within? Is it worth living and dying for? Leave a comment. In looser terms, meta-films can also include movies that use their narratives and style to provide commentary on frequent conventions found in cinema, analyzing clichés and archetypes, often through humor or satire - even if none of the characters feel the need to actually shout, “Hey, stop texting, you’re watching a movie!” The biblical metanarrative makes a comprehensive claim on all humanity, calling each one of us to find our place in his story. It is public truth.” It is the only story that explains the way things were (Creation), the way things are (Fall), the way things could be (Redemption) and the way things will be (Restoration). Wright says that the divine drama told in Scripture “offers a story which is the story of the whole world. In The New Testament and the People of God, N.T. The Bible begins with the creation of all things and ends with the renewal of all things, and in between it offers an interpretation of the meaning of all history. The New Testament tells us this story reaches its climax in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. The story of the Bible clearly presents one over-arching narrative in the story that starts in the garden and ends in a City of God, the New Jerusalem. Therefore, we as Christians reject the postmodern notion that there is no single metanarrative. It has sustained the conviction that there is an objective truth for all in the gospel that addresses the claims of people in any context. The Christian metanarrative with its perceived exclusivity and intolerance would seem to be a hard sell in the 21 st century.įor 2,000 years, the church has struggled with multiple cultural contexts, yet as Wright says, Not because it tells the wrong story, but because it tells a story and claims it to be the most important one. Third, the Bible’s metanarrative is not only suspect, it’s also politically incorrect. Yet, postmodernism has its own metanarrative, since the death of the metanarrative is itself a metanarrative. There is no grand narrative that explains everything, and any claims that there is some truth for all that embraces the totality of life and meaning are rejected as oppressive power plays. For example, postmodernism suggests both capitalism and communism failed to explain our world and have shown to be oppressive, self-serving stories that, in some cases, have brought misery to millions.Ĭhristopher Wright in his book The Mission of God: Unlocking the Bible’s Grand Narrative, suggests that within postmodernist thought, The belief is that metanarratives of the past contain controlling stories that have failed us. Second, postmodernism embraces an almost fanatical suspicion of metanarratives, rejecting the absolutes they proclaim. Only the unified biblical narrative has the authority to enable us to withstand the competing humanist narrative currently shaping our culture. As a result, bits and pieces of the Bible are absorbed into the prevailing cultural story, which then supplants the Bible as the story which shapes our lives. First, we have so dissected and compartmentalized the Bible that we have lost sight of its great overarching story. This comprehensive, grand narrative of Scripture has been neglected for several reasons. This metanarrative includes Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration. One of the reasons many Christians do not fully comprehend the biblical concepts of work, calling, and vocation is because we have lost the vision of the grand metanarrative told by the Bible. The Book of Genesis opens with the account of creation, the start of the most encompassing story that will ever be told. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Gen 1:1) The recovery process may include a drain tube to allow excess blood or fluid to be released, but may only require a bandage to minimize swelling. After the excess skin and fat is removed, the incision is closed with sutures or skin glue. This is not always the case, as we use the patient’s individual facial structure and needs to determine the length and location of the incision. The incision typically starts at the front of the ear, and wraps beneath to the posterior hairline. At the patient’s discretion, general anesthesia or IV sedation are administered for the length of the procedure. It generally takes two hours to complete the procedure, which includes liposuction and skin removal. The neck lift is more invasive than a submentoplasty, in that it treats the whole chin and neck area. Neck lifts are used primarily in candidates who do not require a full face lift, but would like to treat issues such as a double chin or a neck “wattle.” Patients who are older, have problems with skin elasticity, or have hereditary features that can be treated with a neck lift are also good candidates. This rejuvenating procedure is done within a day, and typically takes two to three weeks for the swelling to go down. A neck lift, also known as a lower rhytidectomy, is used to remove or lessen excess skin or fat deposits along the chin and neck area. Most of the content on ITVX is totally free to watch (with advert breaks). ITVX is the streaming service from ITV – the replacement for ITV Hub. As I’m writing this, they’re offering The Shawshank Redemption, Westside Story, Yesterday, The Producers and many more – that’s quite the collection, and all for free (and without adverts!). The list of movies you can stream online for free often changes, but it includes both classics AND big Hollywood blockbusters (though usually not very recent ones). You can watch the movies either directly from your browser, or via the BBC iPlayer app (which is available practically everywhere). Other than that, you just need to register for an account first. It’s both a catch-up service for movies (and TV programmes) that aired on the BBC recently, plus an on-demand library full of interesting things to watch.Īnd, yes – it’s all free, sort of – as most people do need to pay the annual TV licence fee. Channel 4 FilmsĬhannel 4, the free commercial broadcaster, is a great curator of films. We’ll note this in the site’s description. One last note – most of these will work directly on your browser, but some (like the Roku Channel) require a special app or device. So I took the time to comb through the ones that work on our side of the pond, in order to give you the definitive list of the best free movie streaming sites in the UK. Be careful when you search online – many websites will send you to dubious destinations that not only stream illegal content, but also slam you with spammy warnings and pop-up windows… (In general, if it looks too good to be true – with the most recent Hollywood hits being offered ‘for free’ – then there’s something fishy).Īnd finally, all the services listed here work in the UK (as of this writing, at least) – there are many free streaming services, like Tubi, Vudo and more – that unfortunately only work in the US (though there are workarounds for that). Luckily, there are a lot of totally free movie websites as well – yes, you can actually stream movies for free these days, and we’re not just talking about old classics from 100 years ago – you can even find some blockbusters to stream without paying a single pound.Īnd we’re NOT talking about illegal torrents and piracy sites – all the free streaming movie services we’re going to list here, are perfectly legal. Some services (like Amazon’s Prime Video, NOW, etc.) offer limited-time free trials – which is nice, but you still can’t really call it FREE. However, the costs quickly start to add up, whether you’re looking at a Sky subscription or a streaming service like Netflix – unless you find places to stream movies online for free. With so many streaming services out there these days, it’s easier than ever to watch movies online. Based on this information, an internal audience can shift their policies and approach: doubling down on successes, correcting failures, and pivoting toward new opportunities. When a balance sheet is reviewed internally by a business leader, key stakeholder, or employee, it’s designed to give insight into whether a company is succeeding or failing. Balance sheets serve two very different purposes depending on the audience reviewing them. It’s a snapshot of a company’s financial position, as broken down into assets, liabilities, and equity. Moreover, these direct emissions are considered ‘primary pollutants’, whereas the preponderance of pollutants that are deleterious to human health are ‘secondary’ - that is, resulting from chemical processing in the atmosphere. We might even anticipate an increase in certain emissions, for example of volatile chemical products 12 from increased household and workplace cleaning. Thus, the emissions of pollutants other than NO x - such as sulfur dioxide (SO 2), ammonia (NH 3), and various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) - are likely to exhibit changes that are quite different from what has been observed for NO 2, and these differences are likely to vary from location to location. Though emissions from passenger vehicles and aviation have undeniably dropped during the pandemic, emissions from other sectors (for example, power generation, agriculture) are largely unaffected by COVID-19, as of course are emissions from natural sources (for example, plants, wildfires, dust, volcanoes). While the decline in NO 2 undoubtedly mitigates its associated health burden, it is merely one air pollutant of many human activities emit a wide range of gases and particles into the atmosphere. Thus, any COVID-19-driven decline must be disentangled from this pre-existing trajectory, as well as from meteorologically driven variability (for example, refs. As a result, in many regions of the world NO 2 is no longer a pollutant of leading concern for example, in 2019 the whole of the United States complied with the air quality standards for NO 2 ( ). Furthermore, air quality regulations in North America, Europe and, more recently, China, and resulting reductions of emissions are responsible for long-term declines in NO x (for example, refs. For example, meteorology and emissions are seasonally variant, generally leading to a decline in NO 2 from winter to spring in the Northern Hemisphere 7. While the ease with which satellite images of NO 2 are generated has led many to focus on NO x emissions changes, attributing this decline to COVID-19 is complicated by a number of factors. Reductions have been particularly stark in regions dominated by diesel vehicles, which are higher NO x emitters than their gasoline counterparts 6. NO 2 is concentrated in urban regions (due to vehicle emissions and a short chemical lifetime) and is easily observed from space, thus, satellite images have provided clear evidence of declines in populated regions in recent months, spurring commentary on improving air quality 1, 2. Pervasive declines in atmospheric NO 2 (a pollutant associated with adverse respiratory effects) through the spring of 2020 exemplify the effect of these lowered emissions. Less travel (passenger vehicles, public transit, aircrafts) reduces emissions of nitrogen oxides (NO x = NO + NO 2), a major combustion by-product. The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly altered emissions, as, for example, people spend more time in their homes and less time in transit 5. Because these linkages can be highly nonlinear, atmospheric chemistry complicates how pandemic-induced emission changes have and will continue to impact air quality overlooking this chemistry undermines public understanding of air pollution, and risks erroneous decision-making. However, atmospheric chemical reactions are essential links between emissions and atmospheric composition. Much of this discussion, both in the media and in the scientific literature, has neglected the central role of chemical reactions and transformations in dictating air quality, or has suggested that the role of this chemistry is unexpected. 1, 2, 3, 4 for an updated list of papers, see ). This has propelled efforts to measure and analyse changes to air quality (defined here as the abundance of gases and particles harmful to human health), and a rush to publish scientific studies characterizing the links between the pandemic and air pollution (for example, refs. Compelling satellite images of reductions in air pollutants as governments enforced quarantine and social-distancing policies have sparked suggestions that the COVID-19 pandemic has led to cleaner air.
